Retiring champ to ride at Tour Down Under

Friday September 26, 2014

Tour de France champion Cadel Evans will contest the Santos Tour Down Under for one final
time before he retires next year.

Cadel has confirmed at a media conference at the UCI Road World Championships in
Ponferrada, Spain, overnight that he will retire next year, and that he will join his BMC Racing
team at the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under – his tenth appearance at the event.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said Cadel’s announcement was great news for next year’s
race, and hoped it would encourage more people to line the stage routes to farewell a great
champion.

“Cadel may have some unfinished business here in Adelaide, after he was beaten by fellow
Australian Simon Gerrans by just one second in this year’s Santos Tour Down Under,” he said.

“All Australians are proud of Cadel’s achievements, and during his nine appearances at the
Tour Down Under he has certainly become a crowd favourite.

“Confirmation that he’ll be racing with his BMC Racing team in the 2015 event should generate
even more national and international interest. It will be great to welcome him back to Adelaide
for the final time.”

The 2014 Santos Tour Down Under generated a record $45.9 million for the South Australian
economy, and attracted more than 760,000 fans across the six stages, including 36,000
visitors from interstate and overseas.

Cadel’s Tour Down Under record includes winning the Subaru King of the Mountain jersey in
2002, 2003 and 2006, and the Young Rider jersey in 1999.

Race Director Mike Turtur said he’s thrilled Cadel had decided once again to compete in
Adelaide in January, making the Santos Tour Down Under his last UCI WorldTour race.

“Cadel is a champion of our sport. He’s Australia’s only Tour de France winner and road world
champion. We cant wait to welcome him back to Adelaide, and knowing him he’ll be coming
not just to compete, but to win,” he said.

The full BMC Racing Team roster for the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under will be announced in
the coming months. The 2015 Santos Tour Down Under will be held from the 17th to the 25th of
January.
