What’s new for Ride for a reason in 2019

Established in 2009, Ride for a reason is a fundraising-focused ride where cyclists participating in the Santos Tour Down Under’s Challenge Tour can ride the same course as the professionals while raising critical funds for Cancer Council SA.

In its eleventh year, the Ride for a reason program has some exciting enhancements for 2019 including the ability to ride the Challenge Tour wearing an exclusive Ride for a reason jersey*.

Can’t participate on event day? No problems, this year participants can make a difference by riding any course with Ride for a reason’s new Distance Challenge.

Set a target and join the Cancer Council SA team leading out of the Tour Village each day on team rides. What better way to rack up your kilometres riding throughout the eleven days of Tour week and experience and celebrate this exciting event?

As in previous years, you’ll have access to monthly training rides and tips with former Olympian Pat Jonker, expert fundraising support and the opportunity to win amazing prizes as part of the Ride for a reason team. Plus, you can score an exclusive Ride for a reason Santini kit and the refund of your Challenge Tour fee along the way!

Cancer Council SA Chief Executive Lincoln Size said that he was excited to be able to give cyclists a number of ways to Ride for a reason this year.

“Since 2009 we have joined with SATC to give participants a chance to Ride for a reason and raise critical funds for this impacted by cancer in our community and the new distance challenge will give participants even more opportunities to get involved.”

“It can be whatever distance they want, whether it’s 50km or 500km, with family and friends able to support participants as they ride to achieve their goal. Anyone who Rides for a reason also has an extra incentive, with riders able to earn exclusive Ride for a reason kit with each fundraising milestone they reach.”

Former Tour Down Under winner and Cancer Council SA Ambassador Pat Jonker has been Riding for a reason since the event started in 2009. He’s already had a chance to ride the new route, which he says is one of the best to date.

“The Santos Tour Down Under Challenge Tour is a fantastic opportunity for South Australian cyclists to ride the same route as the pros and has become an iconic part of the South Australian riding calendar,” he said.

“I’m thrilled to be involved in the event again this year by supporting Cancer Council SA and leading the Ride for a reason charge.”

“Even though the route might be challenging, it’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by those impacted by cancer, which motivates me to come back year on year and ride for the ones that I love,” he said.
